Some
publishers may need an ISBN number issued from Read Reference Publishing at (800)
526-4902, ext. 2872. They will supply you a ten digit number with dashes. When ordering a
film master for your ISBN, it is important to include the dashes.
Most distributors require a price extension. This is seen as a five digit code to the
right of the main code. The price extension will allow the price to scan in at the
bookstore. For those who do not want a hard coded price, an alternate code may be made.
This is called a 90,000 extension, as those are the numbers used. This simply indicates to
the retailer that there has been no firm price set into the cover. Most stores prefer the
ISBN code with price extension, whether hard code, or open, as in the 90,000 extension.
The encoded ISBN number with the 978 international book code will be placed below the
bars, while the ISBN number will be set above the bar code, unless otherwise specified.
Magazine publishers: If you're working through a distributor that requires CPDA authorized
numbers, call us with your CPDA numbers! These numbers are issued by the Council for
Periodic Distributors Associations at (212) 371-7442. Once you receive your numbers call,
FAX, or e-mail us to get your bar code put on film, labels or for electronic output.
Below, we have supplied examples for you to see the different sizes and formats.
